1860 after Teano, Garibaldi in a
"pizzeria"
After the meeting of Teano, the most solemn moment of Risorgimento, when Giuseppe
Garibaldi had greeted Vittorio Emanuele II as the first king of Italy, "the hero of
the Two Worlds" took refreshment with his General Staff at a inn where he was served
steaming pizzas. Besides Garibaldi was well accustomed to pizzas. Giuseppe Baldi, his
assistant and memorialist, tells that, when he reached Palermo with his "Mille",
he preferred, in that June 1860, to taste a pizza in the little shops of the Vucciria,
instead of sitting at the tables of the great families which wanted to have him as a
guest. |
